When the final months of the year begin to approach, we always find ourselves craving nostalgic holiday flavors. Cinnamon, yes. Pumpkin spice…duh. Gingerbread, sure! Those are all great, but another flavor that has been a true favorite across our family is German chocolate.
Today’s post has been quite the labor of love. ❤️ Over a few months time, we slowly perfected this recipe, and you are going to love it just as much as we do! Promise!
First, we took our classic chocolate cake ball recipe (after a while we couldn’t understand what took us so long to figure out this is hands down the perfect base for this recipe…you can’t beat it! It’s a friend and family favorite, always requested, always a winner!) Then, we added the most amazing coconut pecan filling that give these bite-sized treats a true taste of heaven.
German Chocolate Cake Truffles
Like many other recipes, this cake is tried and true – a family recipe we have come to love for years. We simply adapted it for cake ball form. Feel free to bake this baby up into cakes, top with the glorious coconut pecan filling (yes…you can easily find us hovered over a bowl of coconut pecan filling each time with a spoon, it’s soooo good!) and skip the cake ball step. It’s a definite show stopper. Heck. Yesss!
We have already received rave reviews on these babies, so we know this recipe will win you some compliments as well. You simply CANNOT eat just one of these. But don’t worry. That’s why they are “bite-sized”. You are suppose to eat more than one! Trust us.
Our Classic Chocolate Cake We always bake our own “OG” chocolate cake (it’s a family favorite always requested by not only family, but friends near and far) using our favorite homemade recipe.Serve something different for dessert tonight! These easy to make German Chocolate Cake Balls are made with a moist dark chocolate cake, filled with coconut and nuts all encased in a dark chocolate hard shell. The perfect pop in your mouth treat! The good news? They’re not only delicious but 100% made with store bought ingredients! So…..when I say easy to make…. I mean it! 😀
German Chocolate Cake Balls Recipe
These German Chocolate Cake Balls are cousin to the cake pop. The only difference is….they’re not on a lollipop stick! Which (in my opinion) makes the process of them a lot easier. All you need is a cake mix (plus ingredients on the back of the box) a can of frosting and melting chocolate.
The perfect treat for your kids to make. If they can roll a ball then they can make cake balls. They will probably need help with the chocolate dipping. But what’s a little mess to making fun memories.
Use a white cake mix, make the batter as instructed on the box. Separate the batter into small bowls, add food coloring to each bowl. Scoop batter into cupcake/muffin pans. Bake just like you would a cupcake. One box of cake mix usually makes 24 cupcakes. So if you divide the batter into 6 you should end up with approximately 4 cupcakes of each color. Crumble each color cupcake into 6 separate bowls, add a dollop of vanilla frosting to each bowl. Start with a tablespoon of frosting per color. Combine, continue adding frosting a small amount at a time until when you squeeze the cake together it forms a ball. Form all the different colors into balls. Make sure the balls are small enough to be covered by cake batter. Make another cake batter (any flavor). Pour the batter into 2 (9-inch) pans or a 9×13-inch baking dish. submerge cake balls into the prepared cake batter. Bake as instructed on the back of the box. Voila! You just created a POLKA DOT CAKE!
Angel Food Cake Pops Recipe
Usually when making cake balls you would need to remove the hard edges of the cake. I found if I make the cake the day before and place it into a zip top bag that will soften the edges. This will allow you to use the WHOLE cake!
When storing cake balls or pops refrigeration is not required. Leave your cake balls or pops at room temperature in a cool dry place. Simply cover your cake balls or pops with plastic wrap UP TO A WEEK. You can also use small treat bags. If you want to keep your cake balls or pops in a display, drape plastic warp over the cake balls or pops and tuck under the display. You can store cake balls or cake pops up to 1 month in the refrigerator or 1-3 months in the freezer. FOR THE REFRIGERATOR: Store in an airtight container lined with paper towels. This will help absorb the moisture from the refrigerator. FOR THE FREEZER: Wrap each cake ball or cake pop in wax paper and store in a freezer safe zip to bag. Let cake balls or pops sit out at room temperature 1-3 hours before serving. IMPORTANT: Avoid unsealing or unwrapping your cake balls or pops until they are completely thawed. This prevents condensation.
In a medium mixing bowl add the cake mix, water, oil and eggs. Beat together until combined and all lumps are gone. Pour into prepared pan. Bake 26-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Place on a wire rack to cool completely.
Cakeball Pops And The Secret To Dipping Anything In Chocolate
When cake has cooled, place big pieces into a zip top bag for tomorrow or....crumble into a large bowl, making sure to remove any hard edges. Stir in the WHOLE container of frosting. Form 33-36 balls and place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Place the cookie sheet with the balls in the freezer for 30 minutes.
ONLY MELT ONE BAG AT A TIME. Line another cookie sheet with parchment paper. Pour candy into a microwave safe bowl. Heat 1 minute on high, stir. Place back in the microwave and heat an additional 30 seconds on 70%. Stir. If the candy is not completely melted, keep stirring until creamy. Use a skewer and stick it into the top of a cake ball, dip the whole thing in the melted candy ( shake off and excess candy). Place on the second prepared cookie sheet, shake off or use a fork to remove skewer. While the candy is still wet add the topping. Once all the cake balls have been dipped and decorated, place on the counter to harden or for a faster result in the refrigerator (about 10 minutes).
