I know a lot of people are so intimidated to make cake balls, but shouldn’t be. They’re actually pretty easy to make and the more you make them the more you realize just how easy they are. So worth the little effort needed, especially when some bakeries charge like $2.50 a cake ball.Craziness!

Oreo cookies are crushed and mixed with a baked vanilla cake and some vanilla frosting before being rolled into bite-sized balls and placed in the refrigerator or freezer to harden before being dipped in candy coating and topped with cookies and cream sprinkles…

The key to coating the cake balls smoothly is to make sure the candy coating is melted perfectly smooth (according to package directions) and that the cake balls are very cold so they don’t break apart as they’re being dipped and rolled around in the warm coating.

I always use a fork to dip and coat my cake balls so the excess candy coating drips back into the bowl and less is left to gather around the bottom of the ball once it’s placed on parchment paper to set.

It’s okay to have a littleof the coating harden around the bottom of the cake ball because once it sets you can easily break it off.

Another thing that sets my cake ball recipe apart from other recipes I’ve tried is that I use just 1/4 cup frosting to bind the cake together instead of a whole container of frosting. I’ve found that using just a small amount of frosting still brings it alltogether to easily form into ballswhile maintaining a tender cakey texture.

Because these Oreo Cake balls contain cream cheese, they need to be refrigerated. This will also keep them from softening too much at room temperature. Place them in an airtight container and they will keep in the fridge for up to 1 month.

These Oreo cake balls can be made about 3 weeks in advance if they are placed in an airtight container. Since you can freeze them, you can make them up to 2 months in advance, but do not dip them into the melted candy until closer to the day you want to use them. So, I went about creating something I thought she would love. I came up with these cookies and cream cake pops because what is better than combining Oreo cookies AND cake and then covering them with chocolate? Well, I can’t think of anything 😉

I decorated these babies three different ways, because, well I’m kind of a nerd that way. I can’t just do something one way…I need my options. So, let’s get started!

How To Make Cake Pops (with Pictures)

First, you want to crumble up a vanilla cake. You can either make your own cake from scratch, or use a box mix. Use whatever you fancy.Next, take 4 cups of the vanilla cake crumbs and put into a mixing bowl.

Next, crush up your oreos. Either put them in a ziplock bag and use a rolling pin to crush them up, or put them through a food processor. I used my mini chopper because I wanted them to be finely chopped.

You want 1 cup of crushed oreos. You’ll use only ¾ cup of crushed oreos in your cake pop mixture. The other ¼ will be for decoration.

You’ll also want to add a ½ cup of vanilla buttercream. If you need a buttercream recipe, click here for mine…it’s really good.
