Starbucks Cake Pops can easily be recreated at home, with only 3 ingredients. The secret is making cake pops with regular cake mix.

Easy Eggless Homemade Cake Pops

If you love Starbucks like me, but don’t love the price tag, you need to try my Starbucks Spinach Feta Wraps and my Starbucks Bacon And Gruyere Egg Bites.

I remember the first time I made these I was so nervous. I went on a hunt for a cookie scoop, icing sugar, flour, butter, vanilla extract, baking powder, and chocolate chips all at different grocery stores.

The next time I made them I saved myself a lot of time by buying a boxed cake mix. This is a great way to make your life more simple, and I will never go back to my first attempt method.

Simple Cake Pop Recipe

The inside of the cakes pops is a combination of cake mixed with frosting, which gives it the gooey soft texture. The cake pop frosting is simply melted chocolate wafers. Add sprinkles if you wish, and you’ve got yourself the best cake pop recipe!

I’m going to show you two ways on how to make cake pops. Or as some may like to call it, lollipop cakes.

The first is by using a standard cake mix or leftover cake and mixing it in with enough frosting. Then chilling the dough to make cold cake balls, and sticking them into cake pop sticks or popsicle sticks.

Once you have your cake pop ball, you then dip it into melted candy. You will get rid of excess chocolate and allow it to solidify before eating.

The other way to make them is by using cake pop molds. This is where you would add the cake pop batter to a round pan and it would form the cake into donut holes.

Beat cake mix, water, oil, and eggs in a bowl. Pour the batter into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish or two 8×8-inch round cake dishes and bake in a 350 degree F oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let the cake cool completely, then crumble it with a fork in a large bowl or in the baking dish. Stir the frosting into the crumbled cake, cover, and freeze until chilled.

It’s easier to roll the cake & frosting mixture into perfectly round balls if it’s cold. The cake & frosting mixture is super moist, and at room temperature it makes it extremely difficult to shape them perfectly.

Once they have been frozen, I give them another little roll to smooth out the sides. Then place on a baking sheet.

Melt candy melts in the microwave or in a double boiler. Dip each lollipop stick into the white chocolate, then stick into one of the cake pop balls.

Gently dip the balls into the melted chocolate or spoon the chocolate onto balls and twirl to coat. Decorate with sprinkles if desired.

The best way to allow the coating to dry and set– without ruining the perfectly round cake pop– is to place them upright in a styrofoam block, or a box to harden. There you have it, you have easy cake pops!

The best part about making cake pops is you can use leftover cake crumbs, and mix it in with a small amount of icing and they come out great! You can also customize them but using a gluten free cake mix to make gluten free cake pops.

Make sure your cake pops are cold enough before adding the frosting! If they are not cold enough they will change their shape and start to melt once you start trying to frost.

DO NOTuse too much frosting inside the cake pop. Typically the more frosting the better on traditional cakes, at least in my opinion, but in cake pops this is not the case.

The best way to store pre made cake pops is to place them in an airtight container with a paper towel lining the bottom of the container. They will stay fresh for a couple days on the counter, but for best results I recommend storing them in the refrigerator.

Cake pops are very simple to make because they only require only a few ingredients like baked boxed cake mix, vanilla frosting, and of course they are dipped in melted candy melts (the kind you can pour into molds).

For cake balls– When making cake balls all you really need is a baked cake made with cake mix, frosting, and candy melts to coat the outside of the balls. You can shape the cake balls with your hands or use a meatballer to get the perfect shape and size each time.

For cake pops– you will need the same ingredients here but you need to add cake pop sticks and a styrofoam block to keep the pops upright until they harden.

Here is a quick rundown on how to make these addictive and delicious treats. You can find the full detailed recipe in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Overheat– When melting candy melts, be careful and make sure you do NOT overheat the candy coating. If this happens it will harden up too much.

No Bake Oreo Cake Pops

Thin it out– In order to get a smooth candy coating that will ensure that your cake balls have a gorgeous outer shell you need to thin it out. You can mix in Crisco shortening, coconut oil, or EZ-thin dipping aid for a runnier consistency.

Easy

The best way to prevent the cake balls from falling off the stick is by making sure you added enough frosting to the cake balls and thinning out the candy coating. If the chocolate coating is too thick it will be heavy and way down on the cake balls.

TIP: If you want to avoid using the stick, just make cake balls instead! I have an easy recipe for red velvet cake balls and no-bake oreo cake balls right here in my blog.

The only substitute for candy melts would be chocolate. If you set out to make cake balls without candy melts, you will need to mix 1 tbsp vegetable oil for every 1 cup of chocolate chips.

There are usually two reasons why they can crack. Before dipping the balls you want to set the stick by placing the cake pops in the freezer for 15 minutes. If you dip them and the candy melts are too hot, they will crack because of the sudden temperature change. Or the cake balls were too cold if you kept them in the freezer for over 15 minutes. Again, the drastic temperature change can cause the cracking effect here as well.
