The beauty of these bites is that they will taste good even if your cake doesn’t turn out too well. I used cream cheese frosting because it gives the balls a rich flavor in combination with the chocolate coating.

Red Velvet Cake Balls With Cream Cheese

If this is your first time making cake balls do not be afraid. It’s a pretty easy process and I promise you won’t regret it.

To begin you will need to bake the cake. You can use any kind of cake mix you want or bake it from scratch. While the cake is baking go ahead and prepare your cream cheese frosting.

After the cake is baked, allow it to cool then crumble it into tiny pieces. YOu can do this by hand or with two forks. Next mix in the cream cheese frosting.

The best way to do make uniform cake balls is to use an ice cream scoop. A medium-size scoop (about 1 1/2 inches) makes perfect size balls but you can use any size you want or even popsicle molds or any other fun shape.

After forming the balls I refrigerated them on parchment paper. You can also place them in the freezer. This step will make them so much easier to dip into the melted chocolate and will help them hold together so they don’t fall apart while you are dipping.

The last step is to dip the cake balls into melted chocolate. This step can be tricky but with patience, it isn’t too hard.

If your chocolate has a hard time melting or clumps up, add a tablespoon of melted coconut oil to it and mix through until the chocolate is smooth. Next, dip your cake balls into the chocolate one by one. If you’d like, use cake pop sticks to make cake pops.

That’s all.. didn’t I tell you it was a pretty easy process? After making these you’re going to be so proud of yourself ( and you should be!).

So what’s next? well, you can have fun and make these with any flavor combination you want. Also, if you have leftover cake in the fridge or a cake that didn’t frost quite well you can just mix the whole cake (or cupcakes) in a bowl and make cake balls! This is what I usually do with leftover cake, but let’s leave that as our little secret 😉
