Can You Dip Cake Balls In Melted Chocolate Chips

On May 1st we celebrated my granddaughter Addison's first birthday. It was a beautiful party and the house was packed with about 35 friends and family.

One of my contributions to the party was Cake Ball Pops. This is how to make cake pops the way I learned.

It didn't melt in the microwave correctly. I am sure it was the temp of the microwave but it went from not being melted to burnt.

Now here is the trick and secret ingredient to getting the chocolate to the perfect consistency to dip the cake balls in it.

Mint Julep Cake Pops

Add 1 or 2 tablespoons of solid shortening to the candy melts or chocolate chips. Stir as the chocolate begins to melt. Once the chocolate and Crisco has melted completely check to see if you have the correct consistency. You want it runny enough so that it will drip just a bit from your cake balls after you dip them so they have a smooth coating on the cake balls.

If you melted the chocolate/candy melts in a large bowl transfer some of the melted chocolate coating to a small bowl that will be deep enough that you can plunge the entire cake ball in up to the stick.

Twirl it carefully to get the coating on the entire cake ball and the area where the lollipop stick is inserted into the cake ball. Decorate with sprinkles immediately after dipping each pop.

How To Dip Cake Balls On Bluprint

You can stand the cake ball pops up in a block of styrofoam until the chocolate is completely hardened. I stuck the dipped cake ball pops in the freezer for a few minutes as I made them. Don't leave them in there more than five minutes. If you do they will get a layer of condensation on them.

No Bake Oreo Cake Pops

There are two ways to do this. Option one is great for those that have never made cake pops and also for dipping denser and heavier treats, like Oreo Truffles. I personally prefer Option two. It’s definitely a more efficient way of dipping if you have prior experience with making cake pops. You’ll need different tools depending on the option you pick. I’ve listed them separately below each choice.

Making cake pop dough is simple but takes some time and preparation. Please refer to this excellent Making and Shaping Cake Pop Dough tutorial if you need to become more familiar with the process of making cake pop dough, as well as portioning and shaping it.

Homemade Chocolate Cake Pops

There are many pricey candy dipping tools you can buy at craft stores or bakery supply stores. Save your money. You’ll need the cheapest plastic forks you can buy. The more flimsy, the better!

Birthday

Snap off the two middle tines on the plastic fork(s) and discard them. The fork should be pretty flexible with just the two outer tines.

Place a cake ball on the fork. Dunk into the candy coating, lift out and gently shake off the excess. Gently place on the waxed paper and push the fork down as you slide it out from under the cake ball.

Step By Step Cake Pops

Wrap a styrofoam block completely in plastic wrap to keep the styrofoam particles away from the food. It also makes for an easy clean up!

Dip about ⅓ inch of a toothpick into the candy coating and insert about half way into the cake ball. Do this for all the pieces.

Dip each cake ball by holding them upside down by the toothpick and submerging the ball into the candy coating. Gently lift out and shake off excess while still upside down. Turn right side up and stick the toothpick into the styrofoam block. Let dry completely.

Easy Cake Ball Recipe

Place the cake balls on waxed paper and drizzle over the top with candy coating placed in a ziplock bag. Add sprinkles if desired. Let dry completely.

Separate candy cups. Pipe a dollop of candy coating in each cup to help adhere the cake ball inside it. Place a cake ball in each candy cup. Only pipe a few cups at a time to prevent the coating from hardening before a cake ball gets nestled in. Refrigerate in airtight containers.These chocolate cake pops are made with moist chocolate cake, delicious chocolate frosting, then coated in more chocolate and dipped in sprinkles! These can be made with a box mix or a cake made from scratch, and there are instructions for making it vegan or gluten free!

How To Make Cake Pops (step By Step)

Cake pops are so great for kids or adults, and you can customize them with fun sprinkles for birthdays, Christmas, Halloween, weddings, or pretty much any event or holiday you can think of! While they are a labour of love, they are so worth it in the end.

These cake pops are already dairy free, so to make them dairy free, simply use dairy free chocolate chips, and use this dairy free chocolate cake recipe.

To make the cake pops with regular ingredients, simply swap out the ingredients in the chocolate cake recipe with regular dairy ingredients, and do the same for the frosting. You can use any chocolate melts or chocolate chips for the coating.

Cake Ball Recipe (step By Step Tutorial)

To make vegan cake pops, use this vegan chocolate cake recipe, and use vegan butter and milk in the buttercream. For the chocolate coating, you can use vegan semisweet chocolate chips, or any vegan chocolate chips you'd like.

To make a gluten free version of these cake pops, simply swap out the chocolate cake for your favorite gluten free chocolate cake from scratch or use a gluten free box mix cake.

STEP ONE: Begin making the chocolate cake. If using a box mix, follow the instructions on the box to make the cake. If making this recipe from scratch, follow the instructions here. Preheat the oven to 350°F and preparean8 inch round cake pan or 8x8 square baking pan.

Easy Homemade Cake Pops Recipe

STEP TWO: In a large bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, salt, sugar, baking soda, and baking powder together. Mix in the egg, vanilla, and oil, then add the milk. Pour in the hot water and whisk until smooth. Bake for 20-26 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean.

STEP THREE: Let the cake cool completely, then make the chocolate frosting. Mix butter and cocoa powder together in a large bowl, then slowly add vanilla extract, powdered sugar, and salt. Add milk if buttercream seems too thick.

STEP FOUR: Break and crumble the cooled chocolate cake into the bowl with the buttercream and use your hands or a standing mixer to mix it all together until the frosting is fully combined.

Easy Chocolate Cake Balls (cake Pops)

STEP FIVE: Form the mixture into 1 tablespoon - sized balls and place them on a parchment lined baking sheet. Refrigerate for at least two hours or freeze for about 1 hour.

STEP SIX: Once the cake pops have chilled, melt the chocolate candy melts or chocolate chips in a microwave-safe mug or liquid measuring cup or 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between intervals until melted fully. If using chocolate chips, you may need to thin out the chocolate with a little bit of oil.

STEP SEVEN: Dip the tip of one end of each cake pop stick into the chocolate then gently push it into one of the cake balls, not all the way through but further than halfway. Dip the cake pop into the cup of chocolate and turn it until it's fully coated, letting extra chocolate drip off. Dip in sprinkles if desired and place it in a styrofoam box or a large cup filled with rice or anything that would hold the sticks upright. Allow the chocolate to set for about 30-60 minutes.
