How To Make Koala Cake Pops

Start by cutting apart three round cakes then arrange them to look like a koala's head. Pipe on frosting and it's ready to serve!

I first fell in love with koalas when I was a young child and my affinity has only grown over the years. So when I found out the Cleveland Zoo offered a behind-the-scenes tour that included their koala care area, I jumped at the chance to visit. During our tour, we got to feed parsnips and carrots to two adorable porcupines and watch as a keeper hand-feed two grizzly bear brothers, but my favorite time was spent in the koala enclosure.

During our time with the koalas, we got to see a tiny little joey poke its head out of his mama's pouch. It was an amazing sight to behold.

Koala Themed Gourmet Cake Pops

When we arrived home, I couldn't wait to get into the kitchen to make a Koala cake to celebrate our fun experience.

A few years ago, I made two sweet Panda Bear Cakes using 1 cake mix baked as two 7-inch round cakes and four cupcakes. The cute bear cakes were really easy to make and decorate, so I thought I'd use the same basic technique to make a koala cake.

Being Koalas have bigger ears than pandas, I couldn't use cupcakes, so I baked one 8-inch round cake and two 6-inch round cakes instead.

To make my koala cake even easier than the panda cakes, I skipped the modeling chocolate decorations and just used frosting to create the koala's eyes and nose.

White cake batter - You can make a homemade white cake or you can simplify things and use a white cake mix, which is what I chose to do. I doctored the cake mix by adding ¼ cup of sour cream and a ¼ cup of instant white chocolate pudding mix to the list of ingredients (eggs, oil, and water).

Light grey, white, and black frosting - Once again, you can use store-bought frosting or make homemade buttercream. I like to use Wilton's Decorator Icing. It's bright white, tastes great, and comes in a tub. It is a thick frosting, so I typically stir in some water to thin it out so I can easily pipe it onto my cakes.

Koala Bear Cake Pops

8-inch round and 6-inch round cake pans - Use an 8-inch round cake pan to make the koala's head and two 6-inch round pans to make the ears.

Pastry bags fitted with open star pastry tips - You can use the same size tip (#21) for all three colors, but I chose to use a smaller tip (#18) to make the black eyes and nose.

No Bake Rainbow Panda Pops

Whenever I make character cake pops I get a little nervous because I never know how close I can get the resemblance until everything is done, but this little guy definitely exceeded my expectations. I just want to squeeze those sweet cheeks. Or, well, bite them.

We’ll use black jelly beans to create his nose and white candy wafers to make his ears. Just cut a curved edge from the wafer with a round cookie cutter. The cut edge can then easily attach to the side of the Koala’s head when you are ready.

Start with round cake balls to shape Buster’s face. Use a toothpick to press into the ball and make a smile. This will help create his smirk after being dipped in candy coating. When shaping, you can place a jelly bean in position to help make sure your proportions are good.

Koala Crunch Pops

Oh and those pear-shaped cake balls … well, I’ll show you what they turn into in just a minute. But first let’s make some gray candy coating.

Melt white candy wafers until fluid and smooth. Mix in a small amount of black candy coloring (not food coloring) and stir until you achieve a light gray color.

When ready to dip, remove a couple of cake balls from the fridge at a time to work with and dip in the candy coating. Allow any excess coating to fall off and let dry completely.

Sing For The Holidays

When dry, attach two previously cut candy wafers in position for ears using melted candy coating as glue. Apply tinted gray candy coating over the top of the ears using a toothpick. Let the first layer dry and you can then apply more to make it look fluffy and thick.

To finish his face, draw on the eyes and mouth with blue and black edible ink writing pens. The eyebrows can be drawn on as well, or tint some of the gray coating darker
